How to unlock the Gnosiophilia achievement in Rogue Legacy - Definitive Guide
This takes some time, but very doable. First, a short note about acquiring the achievement: You need to talk to the Enchantress after obtaining the final rune for the achievement to actually unlock. It will not unlock after collecting the final rune from a Fairy Chest.
Now, getting those chests. Here are a number of tips and ways to consider going after it. Let's examine this by looking at the individual room types:
- Kill All Enemies: Killing all enemies take two main forms. The one is usually a large room with numerous platforms where you all you need to do is survive and take down all the enemies in the room. One of them is usually a harder version of a creature. The other type is a room where you are unable to move towards the enemy. You are divided by an impassable wall. For this, you would need to have the right spell to have a chance to kill them. Usually this includes need the axe, the scythe, or crows. If you do not have them, you won't have a shot at the chest. You might want to have the Archmage as your class to have a better chance of getting the spell you need as you can cycle through a few spells. NOTE: The Lich is the only class that can use the Crows.
- Reach Me Quickly: This is usually an empty room (or a lightly guarded room with minimal enemies or traps) where you need to get across the area as quick as possible. This usually lasts for about 5 seconds or less. I have found that having a dash rune makes it fairly easy to get each time.
- No Jumping: This usually requires you have multiple dash runes to cross a gap, or is a maze where you need to drop down. The latter case is more luck based as a result. For not jumping, I cannot confirm whether or not the Dragon class flying counts against. If someone could confirm please let me know and I'll make the edits. NOTE: Thank you slysy for confirming flying with the dragon does not count as jumping. So there is an easy way to get through these challenges if you are a dragon.
- Take No Damage: There are numerous types here. I will try to list them. Traps are commonly part of this type. Usually, that entails spike traps or flame traps. The other kind frequently has spike balls. Either the knights holding them (usually two per enemy) or numerous just floating in the room. The best ways to consider this is to be patient and observe the patterns before making your move. Another strategy here is to consider the Hokage class. The replacement move can help you avoid damage and possibly reach the chest. Also, having a character who is smaller will help a lot as well. In some cases (spike chain knights), you might be able to kill the enemies to make the journey easier, but that is not necessarily possible.
- No Fighting: Usually a vertical movement room where you can't attack the opponents in the room. I've frequently failed this because I attack on instinct when I enter a room. You'll play this similar to how you would a take no damage room, but there is no opportunity to take down enemies.
-No Looking: This one is very rare and funny more than anything else. You need to not look at the chest. Therefore, you would need to air dash backwards towards it. It's very infrequent to see, but you should have a dash rune equipped to get it.
- No Condition/Secret Rooms: These are randomly occurring, but you can see them if you are careful about looking for it. It is frequently a small room where there is a fake floor or ceiling you can jump or pass through. The Fairy Chest is hidden in the walls and you can open it there.
If you have issues with any of these rooms types, you don't necessarily need to do them. You can always find a different room and then find the rune some other way that suits your play-style better. It will just take more time or runs through the castle to finish everything. Even as you find yourself towards the end of a run through all the bosses, considering exploring the whole castle to see if there are other chests you can get. This can also help you gain a lot of extra gold for purchasing upgrades.
There are 55 total runes to acquire. Two of them are available from the start so that leaves you with 53 fairy chests to acquire.

Just to confirm, flying as dragon is OK for the "no jumping" rooms and does not cause you to fail. This makes these rooms trivial if you are using dragon class :)

Runes are found in Fairy chests scattered about the dungeons. In order to open a fairy chest, you need to complete a random challenge. The challenges are:
- Take no damage: You have to reach the chest without taking any damage from enemies or traps. As soon as you reach the chest it will unlock.
- No looking: You have to reach the chest without looking directly at it. The easiest way to reach the chest is to face the other way and dash backwards at it. If you do not have a dash rune, you can swing your sword and walk backwards a bit. As soon as you reach the chest it will unlock.
- No jumping: A trickier one to do; you have to either fly over or dash over to the chest. As soon as you reach the chest it will unlock.
- Defeat all enemies: Simply kill all enemies in the area. Once the last enemy dies the chest unlocks.
- No fighting: The opposite of "take no damage". As long as you do not hurt an enemy you will unlock this chest when you reach it. However, getting hit with Retaliation equipment will damage enemies and permanently lock the chest.
- Reach me in "X" seconds: You have a limited amount of time to reach the chest. You have to quickly read the description and react. Sometimes you can only reach the chest with a speedier character, so don’t be disheartened if you cannot reach the chest.
You have to collect 53 runes in order to unlock this trophy. Progress carries over into New Game+ so don't worry about getting them all in one playthrough. Once you have collected all of the runes, speak to the Enchantress to unlock the trophy.
Unlike blueprints, all runes can be obtained in your first playthrough. The only way to obtain runes is by opening fairy chests, of which you'll unavoidably find a number of during each of your runs. Opening a fairy chest almost always requires you to complete some sort of objective, such as killing all enemies, taking no damage, or not jumping. Here's a quick summary of each objective type and how to complete it.
I recommend doing this at the end of your first playthrough. You'll have gotten many along the way, you'll be strong enough to explore fully without much worry, and you'll have all of the classes unlocked to be able to reach all chests.
Note that once you've collected the last rune, you need to die and return to the Enchantress to unlock this achievement.
- Kill All Enemies (version 1): this is the simplest type of chest, as you'll enter a room with usually a ton of enemies, typically powerful, and you just need to kill them all to be able to open the chest. Like with all rooms, dead enemies stay dead when you leave, so I recommend popping up, killing one or two enemies, leave to reset enemies, then reenter and repeat until you've killed all enemies.
- Kill All Enemies (version 2): this is one of the trickier types of fairy chest, as you'll find enemies behind walls or under the floor and you can't actually reach them to hit them. The only way to complete these objectives is to have the correct spell equipped. For example, the room with a single skeleton below you can be completed with either the crow spell (hits all enemies on screen) or the flame barrier spell (circling flames will reach the skeleton). Others require the chakram, or the scythe, etc.
- Take No Damage (version 1): one type of room that requires no damage involves either enemies shooting at you or spike balls bouncing around. These rooms are entirely skill based. Be patient and take your time, as that's really all I can help with. Of course, being a dwarf will make it far easier to avoid damage.
- Take No Damage (version 2): the other type involves a room with spikes. These again are entirely skill based normally, BUT you can make these rooms trivial if you have a Dragon class. You can simply fly (literally) past all the spikes and complete these rooms with no effort
- No Jumping: these rooms are intended to be completed either with a dash rune, or with luck. However, you can bypass both requirements by using a Dragon class. Flying doesn't count as jumping, so the Dragon class makes every one of these rooms trivial
- No Fighting: as it says, simply reach the chest without attacking. You can take damage, so if you're strong enough, you can simply tank all the damage being thrown at you and just reach the chest to open it
- No Looking: definitely the trickiest one until you know the trick. The only way to get to these chests is to have a dash rune equipped, face away from the chest, then dash backwards until you reach it
- Reach Me In Time: you typically have 5 seconds to get to the chest, which just requires you to walk over to it, with enemies in your way. As long as you don't stop moving you'll always reach it in time
- There is a type of fairy chest room with no objective, and the chest is far off behind a wall (offscreen and not visible). The only way to reach this chest is with a dwarf character, through the dark wall that you can pass through
- Lastly, there is one other room with no objective, and you may not even know it contains a fairy chest unless you look at your (mini)map. The chest is in the ceiling or floow and is invisible aside from a very faint twinkle. You can reach it with any character though, by jumping/dropping through the dark part of the floor/ceiling and then pressing up on the twinkle to open the chest.
