How to unlock the Got Your Back achievement in The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition - Definitive Guide

The achievement unlocks after you kill your 50th enemy with a companion ability. You must have unlocked at least one companion and have a base Inspiration skill of 20 or higher to unlock companion abilities. With one or two companions with you, target a low level enemy that can be killed with the ability--sprats are ideal. Execute the ability (and the enemy) by pressing cn_left. If a second companion is with you, the associated ability is executed with cn_RT. After killing 50 enemies in this manner, the achievement will pop.

The enemy does not have to be killed with a single strike. The enemy's health can be whittled down and the coup de grace administered with the companion ability. Alternatively, if you have two companions with you, you can press cn_left followed by cn_right (or vice versus) to strike the enemies with both companion abilities in a one-two punch. Nevertheless, it is simpler to use non-aggressive low level enemies like (non-rabid) sprats that can be killed with a single strike of the companion ability.

If your playstyle relies on companions and you have decent leadership skills (inspiration & determination), the achievement should pop easily in normal game play regardless of difficulty. Remember to use the companion ability liberally.

If you have low leadership skills and prefer to keep companions out of combat, the achievement becomes more challenging. This might be the case if you are playing on supernova difficulty and are mindful that, if a companion is killed in combat, it is a permanent death. In such a case, you may want to grind specifically for the achievement.

Supernova difficulty grind with low inspiration and non-reliance on companions in combat. (This approach also works for any difficulty and any character build):
--For convenience, turn on the achievement tracker. Designate this achievement as a favorite so you can track its progress.
--Proceed through the game until you reach the town of Edgewater and meet with Reed where you acquire Parvati as a companion. Avoid killing sprats.
Note: If your inspiration is below 20, do not apply skill points to inspiration. Rather, when you level up, do not apply any skill points. Wait until you have sufficient points to bring Inspiration up to 20. In my case, my Inspiration was 6. So, I needed 14 skill points and had to level up twice to have enough spare points.
--If your inspiration is 20 or above or when you have sufficient unapplied skill points to bring your inspiration to 20, return to your ship and make a hard save. Do not overwrite this save. It is the one you will revert to after the achievement pops.
--If your inspiration is below 20, apply skill points to elevate inspiration to at least 20.
--Sleep till night-time.
--Exit the ship. Parvati will automatically accompany you. Return to Edgewater. Enter the main entrance and immediately exit again. This banks an auto-save.
--Turn left as soon as you exit back out of town and circumvent the perimeter of the town counter-clockwise. Note a Spacer's Choice poster on the wall to your left that says, "Taste the Freedom" and turn the corner.
--Shortly after you turn the corner, you will come across a number of sprats. They will be asleep and are not easy to spot. The first is near the base of a big vertical pipe running down a structure to the right. The remaining four are on an approximate line between that sprite and the corner to your front left. Crouch and approach each one making sure it is highlighted by the targeting reticle.
--Optionally, invoke tactical time dilation (TTD), cn_RB to slow the action down.
--Kill the sprat with a companion kill by pressing cn_left when the sprat is targeted.
--Wait for the companion ability gauge shown on the bottom left of the screen to recharge. If you used TTD note that the TTD gauge recharges faster than the companion ability gauge. After the gauge recharges, target and kill the next sprat with the companion ability.
--Note that sprats sometimes (but not always) wake up. If so, you can generally reacquire them while waiting for the companion ability gauge to recharge. TTD helps to target an active, fast-moving sprat.
--After you have the 5 sprites, proceed around the perimeter to the far side of town wrt the main entrance just around the corner of what is depicted as the 'junkyard' on your map. There is no need to go into the junkyard.
--Kill another 6 sleeping sprats while crouching. Again, note that some of the sprats wake up. They may or may not go back to sleep in the intervals when you are waiting for the companion ability gauge to recharge.
--After killing as many of the 11 sprats as is convenient, reload the auto-save you banked when you entered town.
--Repeat the process killing another 11 sprats or so and reload the banked auto-save.
--Continue killing sprats around town's perimeter & reloading the banked auto-save when you run out of targets.
--Some sprats are well hidden and hard to find If you have trouble spotting them, ignore them and reload the banked auto-save before you reach the 11 count. Similarly, if sprats wake up and are not easily targeted, ignore them and reload the banked auto-save before you reach the 11 count.
--Keep an eye on the tracker. When you kill the 50th sprat with your companion's ability, the tracker will get to 100% and the achievement will pop.
--Load the manual save you made on the ship. If you were sequestering and not applying ability points, you are now free to apply them as you see fit and there is no longer any requirement to increase the inspiration skill. Continue with the game.

Note: The sprats can also be killed during the day but they will be active. They are very quick so killing them is more of a challenge and it is a little harder to get the companion kills. However, liberal use of TTD can help you target fast moving sprats.
